Columbia / Screen Gems panel (Comic-Con 2007)

The director we all know and love (Paul W.S. Anderson) showed up to mutters and mild applause but then Mila Johovich came on the scene and the crowd went wild. She really has a huge fan base among the geeks out there. She was looking very exciting and very pregnant. We had panels on Resident Evil: Extinction and 30 Days of Night.
Resident Evil: Extinction
 - According to Anderson, this will be the "bloodiest yet."
 - We saw the world premier trailer which was very much in the same vein as "The Walking Dead" (which if you have not read, go buy it NOW!)
 - The trailer showed the group on caravan in a Mad Max-esque post apocalyptic world. They are of course attacked by zombie masses and lots of shooting and blood splattering ensues. One thing that I noticed was the very poor make-up work. This really looked more like a Sci-Fi channel made for TV movie at least in the effects department. But the crowd loved it so I guess they didn't notice.
 - Johovich loves SciFi and Fantasy. She said her involvement in this franchise was a "natural progression". She thinks this is the best overall story of any of the films. (I might buy that from what I saw in the trailer, especially considering the other 2 were REALLY weak in the story and plot department).
- Anderson said this film is "stronger in the creature design than any of the other films." (Not likely because what we saw really was subpar).
30 Days of Night
Sam Raimi showed up for the crowd to go "ga ga" over. He is producing 30 Days. Also in attendance were the writers of the graphic novel the film is based on and Josh Hartnett / Ben Foster who really looked like they had no idea why they were at a Comic-Con. Deer in headlights.
 - Director David Slade (Hard Candy) said that he tried to find an eskimo actor but could not find the right talent for the lead (the graphic novel's main character is an eskimo). He said it was "not a budget or race concern, just not a lot of eskimo actors are out there with this talent set."
 - The film has received an "uncut R" but they are working to get a regular R rating. They all thought they were going to get an NC-17. According to the director, the violence is not glamorized. It is very shocking and horrible as it should be. (what we saw of the clips was very true. It was gruesome and not in a cool and fun way.)
 - Sam Raimi said his participation in the film was mostly to watch daily's, have a say on the script and add notes as he pleased, and to have a say in the casting.
- Sam said he would love to do a Zena movie some day.
- Its taken 5 years to bring this film to the screen and the writers felt it really kept the integrity of the story.
- The writers of the graphic novel wrote the first screenplay for the film.
- Illustrations were used to stage many of the shots of the film that closely match the graphic novel.
- Sam Raimi and his brother will be writing an Evil Dead part 4. Sam is currently looking for a young director to do a remake of Evil Dead (bad idea).
