I'll be taking a hiatus from writing for this site for the next two years, and this'll be my last post for a while. Like the Assassin's Creed review I just posted, this one is gonna be a quicky (or kwikee?). I'll just list some of my likes and dislikes.
The game is gorgeous. Sometimes. The jungle is always beautiful, always diverse, but you do feel a bit constrained by the level design. It's very formulaic as your path guides you directly to your destination.
Puzzles are fairly easy to catch on to. When there's a dead end, just means you have to find a place to climb (though they're very rare).
Anyone who says the climbing aspect is Assassin's Creed junior has no idea what they're talking about. Not hardly, and definitely not believable. I mean, this guy climbs better than Stallone in Cliffhanger.
I was disappointed they changed the leading lady's hair color to dirty blonde. I preferred the brunette version.
The animations are smooth and supple, but they take too long and only hinder gameplay. I can appreciate the effort put in, but it seems like there are too many that end up in un unwieldy character who often accidentally jumps off cliffs.
I got more mad at this game than any other before. Things, while they work, don't work for a guy like me who likes to get things over and done with. I wanted to breeze through the puzzles, but had to wait for the animations to play out. Sometimes I'd hit the buttons before then, and my character wasn't facing the right way. I'd then fly off a cliff. Things just don't work to they player's advantage here.
The music of the game is amazing. Done by Greg Edmonson, the same guy who composed the music to Firefly, you really feel everything from the music. Here's a special 1UP article on the music behind Uncharted, where you can stream the main theme and another couple of tracks. Be sure to give that a listen.
Combat is uninspired and tedious. Headshots are one shot kills, otherwise 3 bullets or 3 punches to kill a dude. Also, the AI is way to good of a shot, and you can tell they are programmed to miss, when they're guns are pointed at you and they're bullets fly off in another direction. Pretty weak sauce, considering this is much of the game.
You also hardly ever feel empowered with the weapons you use. Only portions when you use a grenade launcher can you really get any satisfaction from a kill. Disappointing, and it brings enjoyment down much.
Overall, I was underwhelmed. The game was inconsistent, off when it was supposed to be on, and on when it was supposed to be off. Some water effects were amazing, others were revolting. Some puzzles were challenging, others were unnecessarily enigmatic. It's something to play, but I wouldn't recommend it to those looking for something new or even fun. I had some fun with the game, though. Don't get me wrong. Maybe it was just me, but I can't say all my headaches could be attributed to user error. Not after dying, and dying, and dying, and restarting, and dying on the same puzzles, over and over. Let's just say some games I've been apprehensive to give up before finishing. Uncharted, I was almost glad to be rid of it.
