My favorite games are the ones that let you do extraordinary things. Ones where you are met with challenges, but thanks to your abilities in the game combined with your own ingenuity, you are able to advance. Probably the main reason I never wanted to play more WWII shooters was because the goal was to make it as real to life as they could get it. Call of Duty 4 was able to pull this effect off because the more real they made it, the more the player could relate and become attached to the game (in light of current events), however it also had a minigame where you shot amazingly powerful projectiles towards tiny enemy troops that would go flying away after hit. You felt powerful, doing something I can't (or don't normally) do in my average life.
Assassin's Creed excells at this.
I know it seems like I'm throwing 5 stars at pretty much everything I review, but what can I say? Chalk it up to good taste since I don't have time to review everything that comes out.
Since I don't have time for my usual, long-winded review, I'll just go over some quick points.
Jumping around old middle ages cities like Jerusalem is fun. Walking around a bland science laboratory is not fun. Luckily, you almost never have to do the latter.
Pickpocketing is fun but not very challenging. Likewise is interrogation.
No load times during gameplay in an entire recreated city from the middle ages?! Sign me up! I can't believe they had all the civilians, guards, objectives, easter egg flags, etc all with the crowd AI and sci-fi elements and zero visible load times. This game is worth it just to be able to jump from building to building across an entire city.
Sometimes the framerate is pretty noticeable. Like when you're synchronizing with observation points, when it does the 360 pan around the city.
Other than some framerate hiccups, the graphics are some of the best I've seen. Lighting effects are inspired, animations are some of the most fluid ever, and clothing works magically.
Camera works really well considering all the places you can go and the tight corners you can get in.
The "interactive" cutscenes are pretty dull. You can walk around in the in-game rendered cutscenes, but that's about it.
The sci-fi element is a great story device and it does effect the gameplay and certainly had a weight on game mechanics. Don't let anyone tell you the sci-fi element should be bagged, it makes sense, adds a great and innovative sci-fi theory to the world of games, and lends itself well to the medium.
Basically, I had a blast with this game. And, while you don't do more than 6 or 7 different objective types, they each have something to offer in different settings and you can always just free run around the city when you get bored.
