BlizzCon opening presentation (BlizzCon 2007)

Blizzard Entertainment's Mike Morhaime opened up the conference with a stiff speech about the success of World of Warcraft. Couple points of note: WoW has over 9 million subscribers and growing. That's bigger than half the countries in the world.
Burning Crusade sold 2.4 million copies in its first 24 hours on sale. That is more than any other game sold in even a month in history.
Next up was Frank Pierce (Exec. VP of Product Development) to talk about some of the new features planned for the coming patches. All stuff we already knew about. He mentioned the integrated voice chat feature, guild banks (which will allow players to store items and gold. It will also include permissions and logging), and the new 10 man RAID's.
He then went on to announce the big news everyone had been waiting for... Wrath of the Lich King (which was unfortunately leaked online 2 days ago so it really took some of the excitement away). What we learned new about Lich King was:
- The story will revolve around Arthas who is the new Lich King (if you played through the WarCraft III storyline)
- New level cap to 80 with all new talents and abilities
- New PvP zones and arenas
- Destructible buildings & siege weapons
- New profession: Inscription which allows players to enhance their spells
- New hair styles and dances (for some reason, this got the most applause)
- A new "hero" class "The Death Knight" which is only to available to higher level players
We were then shown a first look video of the Lich King which you can see here.
Color me unimpressed. Especially after having such an amazing time at Comic-Con last week, this was a big let down. I paid 2x as much to come to BlizzCon and I literally saw everything there was to see today in about 4 hours. I wasn't even able to consume all of Comic-Con in 4 days.
What's worse? Blizz showed a presentation of their StarCraft unveiling of StarCraft II in Korea a couple of months ago and it looked amazing. It was absolutely, jaw-droppingly amazing! Then we get almost NO news we didn't already know and where is the secret MMO that Blizz was supposed to announce? Where is the new information on StarCraft II? Where's the special news for us here in the U.S? The opening presentation was scheduled to be 1 hour and ended up being 28 minutes!
There were a lot of confused faces as I looked around. Cheers were growing quieter throughout the day. There were a lot of disappointed people. I feel like the U.S. got the shaft on this one. Come on, Blizzard! You are making a killing off of your subscription revenues. Why didn't you go all out? I love Blizzard and their games but today I walked away thinking "I paid $100 for this?"
