BlizzCon StarCraft 2 hands-on (BlizzCon 2007)

The Koreans may have gotten to hear about StarCraft 2 first but we got to play it first. Today at BlizzCon 2007 we were given the opportunity to play StarCraft 2 multiplayer as either Terran or Protoss. No Zerg as of yet. At www.starcraft2.com several of the Terran units have been announced and described. Still to come is the biggest Terran unit codenamed "Thor", so large it is not constructed in a factory but actually built by an SCV like any of the Terran buildings.
The Thor looks like an overgrown hulking Goliath. Two huge guns, one on each arm, and a special ability that allows it to pull 4 huge cannons out of its back to fire a continuous volley at a specified area. Incredibly destructive, incredibly fun to play with. Actually, the whole game is just incredibly fun to play. You stand in line for a while and then you are allowed 20 minutes to play a 2v2 game. The 20 minutes feels like 3 minutes. Several other players said they felt the same way. It was so engrossing an experience it felt just like the glory days of the original. This is a good indication that the team in charge is on the right track.
We were given a glimpse of the single player aspect. There were 2 big revelations. First, you will have control over which missions you choose to play and in what order. You are not restricted to a straight line through all of the levels. There will be sub plots and secondary missions that you will be able to pursue if you so desire. And second, you will not be automatically given new units as you progress through the story and move from mission to mission. Upon completion of each mission you will be given some money of sorts which you will be able to use to purchase new technologies. If you ever want to be able to build Battlecrusiers you will need to save your money and purchase that technology. You can also purchase technologies other than unit types such as shields for your marines and some other upgrades that were not described. These features will add some diversity to each players path through the single player campaigns.
One major improvement to the Terran race is the fact that Supply Depots are now equipped with a feature that allows them to sink into the ground and raise back up. This allows you to block a bottleneck with Supply Depots to stop a ground unit rush. If you then need to get a Siege Tank through that bottleneck you can simply lower the Supply Depots and let the tank through then raise them again. This was a very well received feature at the presentation.
There were many questions from the audience regarding the improvements to Battle.net and about the Zerg race but they panel was not very forthcoming on those topics.
